Gun.Smoke and Horses

 

There is a week or so long event in DeKalb called the Kishwaukee Fest. I don't completely understand it because there are some festivals in the area that have been taking place for years and now they are combined into this new fest. Saturday the Northern Illinois Outlaws rode horses and shot guns at balloon targets. Someone was explaining how the .45 Colts work and I just kept thinking about Red Dead Redemption and how Marston was done wrong. Apparently there is going to be a sequel or a prequel. Anyway these folks are serious and boy they like guns. Gun.Smoke on the NES was good too.

 

Malta Days

Since high school sports are done and everybody has graduated it is now time for festivals. Today I was in Malta and I feel I may have missed out on some moments because of the weather. You see I use sunscreen when it's sunny and today it created a problem. Somehow it got into my right eye and I couldn't see clearly and it got all red and cracked out looking so I left the festival a little earlier than I wanted to. Stinking sun and beautiful weather.

 

Spelling Bee

I had the privilege of covering the DeKalb County Spelling Bee this morning. I enjoyed it from start to end and there were a lot of photos to be made. This one probably won't make the paper, but I like it.

Food

Yesterday I photographed a woman making dinner at her home for her family. The woman has a LINK card which wasn't credited at the beginning of the month when it should have. Feeding her family is a constant struggle. So while watching her cook dinner I noticed a calendar on the wall near the stove with a painting of a man presenting a turkey to his wife for Thanksgiving done by Norman Rockwell and so I came up with this.

Third First Day

This August I have taken photographs for stories about the tax break for school supplies, NIU students moving into their dorms, eye exams for children entering kindergarten, first day of school in Kirkland, Malta (above), and Sycamore. Luckily the story on going back to school for home schooled children fell through.
